What To Expect During My Baby’s First Doctor’s Appointment

Your baby’s first doctor’s appointment is an important time for you to get to know your pediatrician and ask any questions you have about newborn care. Dr. Jeffrey Mantia at Grandville Pediatrics in Grandville, MI, offers a wide range of medical services for children, including newborn care.

What You Need to Know about Your Baby’s First Doctor’s Appointment

During your baby’s first doctor appointment, your pediatrician will:

  • Perform a comprehensive physical examination of your baby to determine your baby’s overall physical health
  • Record baseline information including your baby’s length and weight, to monitor your baby’s growth and development over time
  • Order any lab work necessary to determine any underlying medical conditions
  • Assess your baby for any common conditions which may be present including jaundice, eczema, and others
  • Administer first doses of vaccinations to protect your baby against illness
  • Answer any questions or address any concerns you have about your baby’s health, and care of your newborn

Other doctor visits should follow this first visit, including a visit when your child is 2 weeks old, followed by visits at 1,2,4,6,9,15, 18 months, and 2 years. The newborn visits are replaced by well-child visits, which will continue as your child grows.

At later visits, your child’s vision, hearing, and other factors will be included in the doctor's visit. Your pediatrician may also screen your child for behavioral and developmental issues including ADHD and ADD.

Your pediatrician is an expert at the diagnosis and treatment of children’s illnesses, conditions, and diseases. Your pediatrician is also a valuable resource to help you take care of your newborn. You want your baby to thrive, and doctor visits with your pediatrician can help.
